Synthesia, a British startup that specializes in avatars generated by artificial intelligence (AI), has just raised $180 million. An operation that values it at $2.1 billion, more than double the amount reached during its previous round of financing in 2023.
More than 60,000 corporate clients
Founded in 2017, Synthesia markets software that quickly transforms prompts into photorealistic digital avatar videos. According to the company, this is a rather cost-effective way for its customers to train new staff or demonstrate products. Its technology, which is based both on its own model and on those developed by other firms, works in more than 140 languages.
And his solution attracts. The company now has more than 60,000 corporate clients, compared to 50,000 in June 2023. Among them, we find giants like Uber and ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok. Synthesia ensures that 60% of Fortune 100 firms use its services. Its turnover is estimated at $70 million annually.
While it has serious competitors like Runway, Colossyan or Veed, the startup is accelerating to expand its product. For example, it now allows you to create an avatar using the camera of a laptop or smartphone. It also launched its Chrome extension to edit a video from the data available on the screen. A video assistant capable of converting documents into video is also available.
Synthesia assures that its technology is secure
The rise of AI, and in particular video generators, is raising significant fears about the spread of deepfakes. Synthesia ensures that its individual users cannot create content related to current events. On the other hand, businesses have the possibility.
This new fundraising demonstrates that the frenzy around generative AI is still there in 2025, although some analysts expect investments in the sector to slow slightly.
The financing will allow Synthesia to continue its expansion in North America, Europe, Japan and Australia. The company currently employs more than 400 people in its offices across seven countries, including Denmark, Germany and the United States. It plans to launch a feature this year to dictate the body movements and environment of an avatar.
Ultimately, the startup imagines direct exchanges between avatars and users, like a conversation between two people.
