If you regularly follow tech news, you probably know that Intel is going through a rough patch today. The company is lagging behind in technology, losing market share, and its CEO resigned in December. This situation means that Intel may be of interest to potential buyers, given that its capitalization has fallen significantly. While Intel stock was around $60 in January 2020, it is worth less than $25 at the time of writing this article.
For example, in November, rumors mentioned a possible takeover of Intel by its competitor Qualcomm. And apparently, Elon Musk, the boss of Tesla, SpaceX, and owner of the social network X, would also be interested. In any case, this is what is indicated by an article from SemiAccurate, relayed by our colleagues from Journal du Geek. Indeed, SemiAccurate would have had access, two months ago, to an e-mail which would have revealed the American billionaire’s interest in this chip specialist.
However, at this stage, Elon Musk’s teams would only study a possible takeover of Intel. And therefore, it is still possible that the billionaire will not go on the offensive.
Why would Elon Musk buy Intel?
In any case, Musk would have many reasons to be interested in Intel (besides the fact that it would allow him to expand his empire). Whether for SpaceX, Tesla vehicles, or the xAI laboratory, Elon Musk has significant needs for chips. And an acquisition of Intel would allow it to have its own source of supply for certain components.
Furthermore, it is in the interest of the United States to “save” Intel, to the extent that this company allows Uncle Sam’s Country to be less dependent on Asian chip suppliers. Therefore, it is entirely possible that the Trump administration is in favor of a takeover of Intel (especially since Musk is close to the president).
But, as usual, as this information does not come from an official source, caution remains in order. In any case, Musk should have the necessary resources to finance such an operation.
- Intel is in difficulty, with technological lag, falling revenues and a plummeting stock market value
- Previously, rumors mentioned a possible takeover of Intel by its competitor Qualcomm
- But according to a new rumor, Elon Musk would also be interested in an acquisition of this company
