It’s been a few (long) years now that the different operators are redoubled in efforts to install the one that is feverishly expected to be able to install when you disembark in a new accommodation: “fiber“. With flow rates up to 100 times larger than the ADSL network, and better general stability, fiber (but beware of scams!) Is obvious for Internet users, as for access providers. Even if many French people have served for decades, the copper network is more sensitive to the vagaries of the weather, humidity and is more energy -consuming than fiber optics.
The Adsl network dismantling is underway!
Also, the operator Orange will start, today, a vast project to dismantle the Adsl network. A project that will spread out until 2030, and which should represent no less than 1 million copper cables to recover and recycle. Colossal works to say the least, which will concern no less than 162 municipalities in France this Friday, January 31.
Obviously, for the vast majority of customers, this operation is far from constituting any surprise. Orange has indeed prepared spirits (and migration) for about 3 years already.
In addition to a necessary anticipation, the French operator indicates that it has also used various commercial partnerships to allow customers to best support to an alternative solution, but that “It was an ant work to decline the network“. Orange evokes of course the case of the oldest, faithful to their Adsl subscription, and that it was necessary to convince to migrate to the fiber.
For Orange, this dismantling is essential, from a technical point of view on the one hand, since the ADSL is in free fall and that more than 9 in 10 French people are today eligible for fiber. To this is added an ecological (and economical) dimension, since it is a network of a million kilometers that falls asleep, and that there is no interest in keeping it.
Regarding the calendar, from 2026 (next year), no more operator can offer its customers an XDSL connection offer (ADSL, SDSL, VDSL) or a telephone subscription using the network copper. Finally, as of 2030, offers on copper technology will no longer exist in France.
For internet users concerned, and still subscribers to the Adsl network, their operator is required to send them a letter explaining to them how and when this change will take place in their commune. From there to know if the famous “Take”Will become a collector’s object in the coming years…
