the 5 most WTF products from the Las Vegas show

The CES is also the materialization of all the creativity of our human brains. The 2025 edition was once again the scene of astonishing, if not completely crazy, innovations. Useless therefore essential.

The smartphone that turns into a TCL e-reader

TCL continues to highlight NXTPaper, its e-ink screen technology. At CES, it unveiled a smartphone equipped with version 3.0 allowing any smartphone to be transformed into an e-reader.

TCL explains that it has finally succeeded in combine the fluidity of a classic screen with the reading comfort of an e-reader. In reality, the NXTPaper 3.0 panel still needs some adjustments to really compare to a traditional screen. However, the results are significantly more satisfactory than previous generations.

Above all, TCL has developed a switch button allowing you to switch from a smartphone display to an e-reader display in a matter of seconds. In addition to providing greater reading comfort, this innovation triples the battery life of the smartphone, reaching up to 65 hours of use.

The spoon that salts food… without salt

It is undoubtedly among the products that attracted the most attention during CES 2025. The Kirin connected spoon, capable of salting foods without salt, caused a sensation in Las Vegas.

The company behind this unique spoon uses a fairly simple physical reaction (which we sometimes tested in college): the conduction of electricity through saliva.

Sodium cells stagnate inside our mouths. Rather than adding salt to our food, the Japanese company has designed a spoon capable of collecting these cells to place them on the tongue and thus giving the illusion that food is salty.

For electrical conduction to take place, simply grab the spoon and bring it to your mouth. After half a second, a light signal indicates that the chemical reaction has taken place and that the food is salty. There are several intensity levels with rather random results. During our tests in the lounge bays, we did not necessarily smell the sodium content. Above all, the manipulation turns out to be dangerous. Unless it’s a dexterity problem…

The connected guitar that helps you learn to sing like Elvis

Play it like Guitar Hero, in real life 🎸#these #guitar #tech

Have you always dreamed of playing Elvis but don’t know how to play a single guitar chord? At CES 2025, the LiberLive guitar brings you a solution.

This connected guitar with a futuristic design takes up the principle of the Guitar Hero game. In place of strings, physical buttons are placed all along the neck of the guitar. Each of them can reproduce a guitar chord.

The object is associated with an application integrating hundreds of songs to which the developers have added the chords to play. No need to reproduce the rhythm, a single hit triggers the rhythm corresponding to the song.

Easy as pie? Yes, if you’ve never played a guitar in your life. For others, the experience is very frustrating. Moreover, the LiberLive C1 is sold for $799. Enough to buy a first real guitar with a few extra lessons.

Swippitt: the toaster that “charges” a smartphone in less than 5 seconds

@pressecitron

No more battery in your smartphone while you go out in the evening? We have the solution for you! CES2025 smartphone Swippitt

Who has never found themselves running out of battery just before going out for a drink with friends? If certain brands already allow you to recharge a smartphone in a few minutes thanks to fast charging technologies, Swippitt’s proposal remains unique.

The Irish start-up has in fact imagined a device capable of replacing the phone battery in less than 5 seconds. To achieve this feat, the user must first attach a case to their smartphone (an iPhone 14, 15 or 16 at the moment) incorporating an interchangeable battery.

Then, a device that looks exactly like a toaster changes the case’s battery in less than 5 seconds. To do this, it includes five batteries that can be allocated to each member of the family. An application allows you to monitor in real time the number of batteries available, their capacity, etc.

Although very attractive, the Swippitt remains a product reserved for consumers with comfortable finances. In fact, each shell costs 150 euros while the machine integrating the 5 interchangeable batteries is sold for 450 euros.

AutoKeybo: the keyboard that draws like a gun (cowboy!)

@pressecitron

The keyboard that’s making the buzz at CES 2025! CES2025 autokeybo keyboard

If a single product were to symbolize the madness of CES, it would be this one. The AutoKeybo is a keyboard with a mechanism to bring up a trackpad or half of the keyboard with a simple hand gesture.

The keyboard inventor thought about this concept after suffering two injuries (one to the shoulder, the other to the wrist) preventing him from switching from the keyboard to the mouse by moving his arm. He therefore imagined a keyboard that would respond to finger movements.

Cameras are thus placed in the center of the keyboard in order to observe hand movements. When you want to reveal the trackpad, simply lift your fingers slightly to the side. The same gesture brings up the keyboard again.

Although spectacular, this keyboard is only at the prototype stage. Its creator is also looking for investors to improve its recipe and optimize the design in order to meet industrialization requirements.

So, which innovation seems the craziest to you?
