At the time of writing, the social network TikTok is no longer accessible in the United States. Indeed, the Supreme Court validated the law banning the social network. The White House has announced that it will not apply this measure, leaving the new Trump administration to manage the matter. But TikTok said in a statement that this statement and that of the Department of Justice “failed to provide the necessary clarity and assurance to service providers who are integral to maintaining the availability of TikTok.”
TikTok no longer works in the United States
Google and Apple also implemented the ban, blocking access to the TikTok application on their application stores. “Apple is required to comply with the laws in force in the jurisdictions in which it operates. In accordance with the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act, applications developed by ByteDance Ltd. and its subsidiaries – including TikTok, CapCut, Lemon8 and others – will no longer be available for download or update on the App Store for users in the United States starting January 19, 2025.”explained the Cupertino company.
On his social network Truth, Trump indicated that he will sign an executive order to delay the application of the ban on TikTok. He is even trying to bring back the application, before his inauguration, by promising that there will be no sanctions for companies that allow TikTok to operate. “Americans deserve to see an exciting inauguration on Monday, as well as other events and conversations”, we also read in this publication.
Donald Trump’s plan
Donald Trump’s decree would buy time to find a lasting solution. “I would like the United States to have a 50% stake in a joint venture. In doing so, we will save TikTok, keep it in good hands, and allow it to grow. Without US approval, TikTok does not exist. With our approval, it is worth hundreds of billions of dollars, if not trillions”writes Trump on his social network Truth.
It remains to be seen whether the idea will be accepted by ByteDance, the Chinese company which offers this social network.
