Microsoft Announces “Local” Version of DeepSeek for Windows: Here Are the PCs That Will Be Able to Benefit

Microsoft is a privileged partner of Openai and its biggest investor. However, while using Chatgpt technologies, it does not hesitate to offer competing models to its users. On the GitHub coding platform, for example, the COPILOT assistant allows developers to choose between OPENAI AI models, those of Google or others, depending on their needs. And Microsoft was quick to adopt Deepseek, the new Chinese and open source AI that is currently buzzing.

Yesterday, the firm announced the availability of Deepseek R1 in the catalog of Azure models Ai Foundry and on the Github coding platform. And in another publication, the firm also announces a local version of Deepseek on Copilot+computers.

More precisely, Microsoft will offer an optimized version for the NPUs (the IA chips found on certain smartphones and PC) of Deepseek R1. First, this version will be available on COPILOT+ devices using Qualcomm Snapdragon X chips. But Microsoft plans to extend this integration to COPILOT+ PC with the Intel Core Ultra 200V processor and others.

Deepseek arrives on Windows

Microsoft has improved Deepseek for it to operate locally on the NPU computers. The first model will be Deepseek-R1-Distill-qwen-1.5b, but more powerful versions will be integrated later. “Thanks to the speed and power characteristics of the version optimized by NPU of Deepseek R1 models, users will be able to interact with these completely locally revolutionary models”, Indicates Microsoft.

However, to take advantage of these models, it will be necessary to use apps that take advantage of this new feature. Indeed, Microsoft’s goal is that developers rely on these modified Deepseek versions to improve AI -based experiences on their apps. Interested developers will be able to see Deepseek in action on Copilot+ PCs by downloading the AI Toolkit vs code extension.

The fact that this integration of Deepseek is reserved for PCs called “Copilot+” is normal, since, to run AI locally, the computer needs a local calculation power. And Copilot+ PCs have components dedicated to AI that is not found on other machines.

  • Microsoft announces a modified version of Deepseek, which will be able to operate locally on Copilot+ PCs
  • It will allow developers to offer new apps that rely on this artificial intelligence
  • The modified version of Deepseek will first be offered on machines using Snapdragon X chips, but it should be supported by other PC Copilot+
