Recently appointed Director of Meta World Policy, Joel Kaplan, a well-known republican strategist across the Atlantic, did not go to Europe for nothing. Participating in the Munich Security Conference last weekend, the manager castigated digital EU regulations and threatened to bring Donald Trump and his government in the event of disagreement.
Meta will not hesitate to warn the authorities
He underlines thus: “When companies are processed differently and in a way that is discriminatory towards them, this should be reported to the government of the country of origin of this company”. And the new director to add:
Although we wanted to work within the framework of the laws adopted by Europe – and we will always do it – we will point out when we think we have been treated unfairly.
Joel Kaplan’s position intervenes in a very particular context. US vice-president JD Vance stupid the audience of this event by pointing to European regulations on social networks that he accuses of repressing freedom of expression.
Let us also recall that Meta has already received a fine of more than 2 billion euros for violation of antitrust and data protection rules. The company is also the subject of an investigation into content moderation. So many burning files which will undoubtedly be the subject of tension between the EU and the new US government.
Donald Trump takes up position
Donald Trump had already provided direct support to American tech giants at the last World Economic Forum in Davos in Switzerland. The Republican has castigated the European regulations which caused setbacks to the national champions of Uncle Sam:
These are American companies, whether you like it or not. They shouldn’t do that. It is, as far as I’m concerned, a form of taxation. We have very big complaints against the EU.
For his part, Mark Zuckerberg, CEO and founder of Meta, has come a lot closer to Donald Trump since his election. While the tenant of the White House once threatened him to send him to life, the entrepreneur now says he wants to work with him “To oppose foreign governments that attack American companies to censor more”.
