While the banning of TikTok in the United States seems inevitable, Instagram has just announced an important new feature for its Reals, a video format which was precisely created to compete with TikTok. In a video published this week, Adam Mosseri, the boss of Instagram, presents this new feature.
“We want Instagram to not only be a place where you consume entertaining content, but also a place where you connect with your friends over that content. Now when you go to the Reels tab, you’ll see a feed at the top right dedicated to Reels that your friends have liked or rated, and you can start a conversation with them from there.indicates this one.
The feature is being rolled out “in a few countries”, and should be offered in others later. Instagram seems to want to take advantage of the ban on TikTok by making its video format more attractive, thanks to this feature.
The ban becomes clearer (unless there is a change of direction)
As a reminder, the American Congress passed a law which provides for a ban on TikTok in the United States, unless the social network is sold by its owner ByteDance. TikTok failed to have the United States Supreme Court block enforcement of this law. And although Donald Trump is in favor of maintaining the social network, it will not arrive at the White House until December 20, while the ban must apply on December 19.
For its part, the outgoing administration of Joe Biden has already indicated, in a press release, that it will not apply the ban. “Given the simple fact of timing, this administration recognizes that actions to implement the law must simply fall to the next administration, which takes office on Monday,” said Karine Jean-Pierre, White House press secretary, according to NBC News. However, according to TikTok, this statement does not provide sufficient guarantees.
“The statements released today by Mr. Biden’s White House and the Department of Justice have failed to provide the clarity and assurance needed by service providers who are integral to maintaining TikTok’s availability for more than 170 million Americans”we read in a press release from the social network.
- As the ban on TikTok in the United States becomes clearer, Instagram announces a new feature for its Reels
- This allows you to have recommended video content based on what friends have liked or commented on.
- The Supreme Court of the United States is not going to save TikTok and the social network indicates that recent statements from the White House are not enough to prevent the ban, pending the arrival of the new Trump administration which will have to manage this file
