How Deezer wants to convince you to leave Spotify?

The arrival of music streaming platforms has completely changed our habits and our way of listening and consuming music. If they have brought a lot of good things to the industry, the subject of artists’ remuneration remains heated. A few weeks ago, the President of the Republic, Emmanuel Macron, told the media Variety that“with music streaming platforms, singers do not receive fair remuneration”.

This Wednesday, January 15, 2025, Deezer and Sacem announced their association for fairer remuneration of copyrights. How ? By changing the current compensation model. A great first in the world of streaming platforms.

Deezer is committed to fairer remuneration for artists

Until now, music streaming platforms all worked more or less the same way. That is to say, they pay the most listened to artists better with a “pro rata” system. Even if you listen to less popular singers, those with a large market share will receive a portion of your monthly subscription.

Thus, Deezer and Sacem are joining forces to “introduce the first global update of copyright remuneration in the streaming era”. This is what Alexis Lanternier, CEO of Deezer, explains. He explains that this model “ensures that a greater share of what subscribers pay goes back to the artists they listen to, while helping to combat fraud”. The Artist-Centric model developed in France with Deezer promises to promote real music.

The French music streaming platform is counting on this new model to minimize fraudulent behavior, such as songs whose plays are boosted by robots. Deezer promises regular cleaning of its catalog. It will also remove noise and tracks that haven’t been listened to in a year to increase artists’ market share and provide a better user experience. This new remuneration model guarantees to reward true professional artists, who cultivate their fanbase. Thus, a song by an artist with at least 1000 streams from 500 different subscribers each month will be paid twice as much per stream. This rule will also apply to songs actively searched for or found in non-algorithmic playlists.

We can only hope that this change of model on the part of Deezer encourages other music streaming platforms to do the same. Spotify currently operates the prorated pay system and pays artists €0.0028 per stream. In any case, this new remuneration model could certainly push some consumers to choose Deezer.
