This is a matter that could create a precedent as part of the fight against hacking. A Spanish court has indeed ordered Google to come and testify in a case concerning an IPTV. The Liga even requires criminal involvement for the leaders of the tech giant and those of Apple and Huawei. Let’s take stock.
Google accused of complicity
It all started in 2022 when the IPTV NewPlay application then available on Google Playstore is accused of counterfeiting and hacking. It would have been downloaded 900,000 times just in 2021.
La Liga believes that using this service, users can access M3U reading lists. These files do not contain counterfeit themselves, but they can point to locations where audiovisual content is hacked.
The Spanish Football League obtained a judicial decision which orders Google, Apple and Huawei to remove the application of their respective shops. Which was carried out by these companies.
That said, users who have installed these applications on their devices can always use them. La Liga therefore requests that the three tech giants directly delete NewPlay on them. After Torrentfreak, This was not the case.
Consequently, an order made by a court of Cieza in the Murcia region asked the leaders of Google Ireland Ltd and Google Commerce Limited to testify on their relations with NewPlay. This is the case with the way in which the benefits are generated and on what scale. Huawei is also required to appear, but there is no mention to Apple.
According to a source wishing to remain anonymous with the Liga, this case is major. It could indeed create a “Previous very important, because the judge in a case against a pirate application considers that Google can participate, in lucrative purposes, in the benefits obtained”.
Spain mobilized against hacking
It will therefore be interesting to follow this file and know the position of the tech giants in this area. In any case, we can see the voluntarism of the liga on the shutter of the hacking of IPTV.
With our neighbors, we recently told you about this operation carried out by the police, who arrested three individuals in Cartagena, Coria Del Río and Móstoles for having operated an illegal pirate network offering video games and counterfeit audiovisual content.
The survey, initiated in 2022 following complaints for copyright violation, led to blocking six websites. The network had more than 16,000 paying subscribers and generated more than 1.1 million euros in profits. The suspects whiten part of the money via a cryptocurrency mining farm, ensuring a monthly income of 6000 euros while hiding their illegal activities.
