Modern smartphones have many things in common. Among the features that bring them together, the presence of a camera on the back of the phone is an institution. It is unthinkable to market a smartphone in 2025 without taking great care of its photographic lens.
On the other side of the spectrum, phones that are much easier to use, designed to “disconnect” us, are making their way into the mobile phone market. Unlike smartphones, “dumb phones” are built around one idea: to be as simple as possible.
“Dumb phones”: a growing trend
These devices do not benefit from a superb screen, an ultra-fast processor, they do not allow you to surf the internet or spend hours on social networks. They work like old smartphones, lacking current technologies.
One of the most well-known brands in this market is light. The American company has just presented its new version of its Light Phone. With this third iteration, the creators of the “simplest phone in the world” couldn’t avoid the camera.
It was a recurring request from the public, and now a small, very basic objective has just appeared on the back of the phone. Launched last June, this new version is slightly larger, brighter and a little faster than the old models.
A “dumb phone” in tune with the times
When we talk about “dumb phones”, we often imagine Nokia 3310s with a touch screen, but in reality, these phones are much closer to the latest iPhone than to the pagers of the 90s. With the Light Phone 3, users therefore benefit from a camera, on the front and back, but also from a fingerprint reading sensor to unlock the phone.
This new model also has a Podcasts and Music application. If it is not directly connected to the internet, it is possible to download your favorite songs by going to the Light website with his computer.
If you are interested in this phone, pre-orders are already open. The Light Phone 3 retails for $599.
The camera: the No. 1 issue for all manufacturers
With the arrival of a camera on the back of his phone, Light brings us back to our expectations. Among the most important elements on a phone, the camera is always the first one we look at. Several opinion studies have shown that this characteristic is at least as important as the price of the smartphone.
So to attract as many people as possible, manufacturers are doubling their ingenuity to offer ever more realistic shots. Apple improves its iPhone camera every year and the arrival in the coming days of the new Samsung Galaxy 25 (25+ and Ultra) should shake up the buzz on the “photophone” market.
