From what level of income can you consider ourselves rich in France in 2025? This question is passionate and the answers of each of us will undoubtedly be very different. That said, the observatory of inequalities has defined several criteria in a recent report to distinguish the wealthiest French.
From what salary do we become “rich”?
According to the figures of this organization cited by Ouest-Francewinning three monthly smics is sufficient to be one of the richest 7 to 8 %. In detail, a single person without children who receives 3,860 euros net per month after taxes is considered to be “rich”. We use the quotes, because it all depends of course on its personal heritage and its place of residence.
In the case of a childless couple, they would need a remuneration of 5,790 euros per month to integrate this category of people considered to be the most wealthy in the country. The level rises to 6,948 euros if their home includes a child under the age of 14. Finally, a couple with three children will have to pocket 10,808 euros to be considered “rich”.
Commenting on these figures with our colleagues to RMCAnne Brunner, Director of Studies of the Observatory of Inequalities, stressed: “In France, we have a lot of trouble saying the rich word and we prefer to call a cat a cat”. While there is a poverty line established by INSEE, we could, according to her, establish a threshold of wealth. The director of this observatory, Louis Maurin, was even more precise on this subject and he proposes to establish this threshold at the double of the median standard of living.
INSEE latest figures
As a reminder, we quoted the INSEE data last week, which notably reveal that the median salary is at 2012 euros net monthly in the private sector in France.
As for employees who receive 3,000 euros net per month, this is among the country’s best 21 % in the country. But, to see the glass half full, 79 % of employees earn less than this sum which makes many French people dream.
Crossing the mark of 4000 euros net monthly brings you into the country’s best paid 10 %. Finally, you have to earn more than 9,600 euros net monthly to integrate the club of 1 % of the highest wages. We let you know more in detail of these figures in our previous article here.
